Monarch Cabin

Long-term visioneering project for a small cabin on a family owned wooded plot of land overlooking a lake.

This compact cabin contains living and dining space, a kitchenette, storage, a bathroom, a sleeping loft, and a bunkroom for four – all under a modest 900 square feet.  Exterior materials are natural stained wood, corten steel, and concrete.  The vertical wood siding creates a dialogue with the existing trees, with long bands of windows to create panoramic views. The circular concrete columns mimic tree trunks, elevating the main level, and corten steel provides a warm and maintenance free accent cladding.

The rustic modern interior spills onto an exterior deck overlooking a lake – blurring the separation of inside and outside.  The sleeping loft generates vertical drama within the cabin and provides a treehouse-like perch among the leaves.  The bunkroom is partially submerged below the main level to create a privacy separation between the sleeping areas.
